Business Equipment, Tools & Software

A reliable computer and a fast, stable internet connection are fundamental for running a home-based business. Your computer serves as your primary work tool, allowing you to create, manage, and market your crafts efficiently. 

A fast internet connection ensures seamless communication with customers, quick order processing, and smooth online presence. Look for a computer with ample processing power and storage capacity to handle your business tasks, from designing product listings to managing accounts.

High-quality product photos are crucial for online sales and marketing. A decent digital camera or smartphone with a good camera can help capture your crafts in the best light.

A tripod and proper lighting equipment, such as light boxes or natural light sources, enhance the quality of your images. Basic photo editing software  can be found in the App Store on your phone or if you’re using a computer I find Canva to be super helpful. I’ve also used Lightroom to make photos look appealing and professional to potential buyers.

Bottom line, when you have a business that involves a physical product, you’ll need the right equipment. 

Website or Social Media Account

Depending on where you are planning to sell your crafts, a professional website or e-commerce platform is essential for expanding your online presence and reaching a broader customer base. Platforms like Shopify, WordPress with WooCommerce, or Wix allow you to create a user-friendly and visually appealing online store to showcase your crafts. 

You can customize your website to match your brand, and these platforms often provide features for inventory management, order processing, and secure payment options, simplifying the online selling process.

If you’re just starting out as a mompreneur, you can create a business social media account and begin building your online presence and sell your items there. 

Commitment to Personal Growth

Personal growth and self-improvement are integral to a Mompreneur’s journey. As the dynamic landscape of entrepreneurship evolves, continuously enhancing your skills and knowledge is essential for staying competitive and adaptable.

 I have limited experience using Shopify. We used it for about a year when we started a small gift boutique.

Big Cartel might be a platform for selling crafts you haven’t heard much about. I believe it to be a hidden gem and am currently using it to sell plushies I crochet until we get a shop set up here on our website.

Don’t underestimate the value of in-person sales. Participating in local craft fairs and markets can allow you to connect with your community and make immediate sales.

While they can be a lot of work to set up and to prep for,  local markets is one of my favorite ways to sell handmade items.  I’ve been enjoying the time I’ve spent with my teenagers at our weekly markets the past couple years.  Its been a great change of pace on my mompreneur journey. A lot of times you need to get some money coming in before you can actually start a new business. So let’s delve into a few ways you can start making money and then go into some other ways to earn income from home. 

Sell Items you no longer need

Can I start with quite possibly the simplest way to earn extra cash from home? Go through your entire home and make a list of items you no longer use, want, or need! Clothes, cookware, furniture, games, movies – you name it, there’s someone out there who wants it!

Don’t overthink selling your unused items.  Just take the pics, name your prices and get selling!  Big things are on the horizon for you!

Mompreneurs can Create something you Love and sell it

Do you have a hobby that involves creating? Why not turn that hobby into an income stream? Etsy, eBay, Amazon, and even Pinterest are all great ways to get your creations out there. Digital marketing continues to rise as more and more businesses become established online. What could you create or design and sell? Here are a few possibilities to generate some ideas:

  • Sewing/Crochet
  • Jewlery
  • Cups/Water Bottles
  • Baked Goods
  • Candles
  • Digital Downloads
  • T-shirts/Clothing

There is more to this topic than selling your unused stuff at garage sales. So here on Crafty Mompreneur I’m going to devote quite a bit of time on this blog to how to go about doing this this. 

Freelancing Skills you Have

If being crafty isn’t up your alley, lets do a little exercise to see if I can help you get some ideas flowing. Grab a piece of paper and jot down a list of all your skills and talents. What are you good at and what do you enjoy doing. You could start offering those skills to others as a freelancer. 

For example, if you wrote down speed, pays attention to detail, excellent grammar understanding, and good listening skills on your self assessment, becoming a transcriber may be a great option for you to make extra money from home.

There is typically no experience required to become a transcription, although some companies may need you to complete a small amount of training, application process, or a short course! 

Maybe you’ve got excellent administrative abilities.  You could become a Virtual Assistant! Like teaching others?  You could become an Online Tutor.

Do you love making social media content. You could become a Social Media Manager.

When you think about it, the possibilities are endless when it comes to freelancing. 

Become an affiliate and share what you love

You already tell people about your favorite products and services, wouldn’t it be nice to get paid for your friends liking them, too? Many mompreneurs are earning very lucrative incomes doing this! Almost anyone can become an affiliate with Amazon, but don’t stop there! Think about some of your favorite products you use on a regular basis – cleaning supplies, hair care products, vitamins and supplements – there really are a ton you could be paid for to share!

To help you get started with who to potentially become an affiliate with, here are a few questions to consider:

  • What are your morning and evening routines? What products do they consist of?
  • Are you a mom? What baby products could you never live without?
  • What does your health and fitness regimen consist of? Is there equipment and/or supplements that have changed your life?
  • Are you a member of any monthly subscriptions that you love?

While there is strategies involved for each of these topics, especially if you’re wanting to start a successful business!  The important thing to remember is to believe in yourself and start!

One way to  set clear boundaries is to establish dedicated workspaces within your home. This separation between work and family life is essential. It helps you stay focused during work hours and lets your family know when you’re ‘at the office’ and when you’re available for them.

Additionally, it’s valuable to set specific working hours and communicate them to your family, ensuring everyone understands when you need uninterrupted time. By setting boundaries and sticking to a schedule, you can create a balanced and productive work-from-home environment, minimizing distractions and fostering a harmonious family life.

I could write an entire article on time management, which I probably will at some point. But for the sake of this overview article we’re gonna keep is short and simple!

The absolute best way that I’ve found to be the most productive when working at home as a mompreneur, is to craft a daily or weekly schedule that allocates specific times for work, family, and personal time. This will help you stay organized and ensure you have time for everything.

While I do love a paper planner and will share my favorites in another blog post, I will always suggest using Google Calendar to map out your day!  I love using the color coding method.  This was something I learned a really long time ago from Dani Johnson. I learned so much from this book. Honestly, the days that I do this are by far my most productive days!  

Self Care

In the fast-paced world of entrepreneurship and the multitasking demands of motherhood, it’s easy to neglect yourself. However, setting aside time for self-care is not a luxury but a necessity.

Self care is going to look different for everyone.  It can take various forms, such as short walks to clear your mind, regular exercise routines to boost your energy and release stress, mindfulness practices like meditation or deep breathing exercises, and even indulging in your favorite hobbies.  I’ve been all about crochet lately! But really, it can mean different things 

These self-care moments rejuvenate your spirit, reduce stress, and provide the mental clarity needed to make sound decisions in your business. Moreover, they enhance your overall well-being, leaving you more resilient and better equipped to tackle the daily challenges of being a Crafty Mompreneur. In caring for yourself, you’re better equipped to care for your family and business effectively.

Delegate and Seek Support

Don’t be afraid to delegate tasks or ask for help. Family members can contribute to household chores, freeing up more of your time for your business.

Being someone who likes things to be done a certain way, I’ve struggled with this.  I’m constantly reminded by mentors (and my hubby) that I can do anything, but not everything! More on this in another post!

Network with other Mompreneurs

Networking with fellow Mompreneurs can be a game-changer on your entrepreneurial journey. Building a community of like-minded individuals can offer support, shared experiences, and valuable insights.

To connect with other Mompreneurs, consider attending local business and craft events, such as craft fairs, maker markets, or small business meetups. These gatherings provide opportunities to meet and collaborate with other entrepreneurs who share your passion.

Joining online forums and social media groups dedicated to Mompreneurs is another effective way to connect and engage in discussions about common challenges and successes.

Additionally, you can seek out local or virtual networking events specifically tailored to women in business, where you can forge meaningful connections and potentially find mentors. Remember that the relationships you cultivate with fellow Mompreneurs can provide inspiration, guidance, and a sense of camaraderie, making your journey as a Crafty Mompreneur even more rewarding.

Continuous Learning

Investing in continuous learning is a cornerstone of success for a mompreneur. This means actively seeking opportunities to expand your craft skills and business acumen.

Consider enrolling in workshops or online courses related to your craft. For instance, if you’re into handmade jewelry, explore courses on new jewelry-making techniques or trends. For business growth, look for courses on topics like digital marketing, e-commerce strategies, or effective financial management.

Staying updated on industry trends is equally essential. Regularly reading industry publications, blogs, and attending craft trade shows can provide insights into emerging styles, consumer preferences, and innovative marketing strategies.

Additionally, following thought leaders and successful Mompreneurs in your niche on social media can offer practical advice and inspiration. Investing in your knowledge is an investment in your craft business’s future, as it equips you with the skills and strategies needed to adapt to a changing market and to maintain a competitive edge.

Every Crafty Mompreneur has a unique and inspiring journey that led them to where they are today. I, too, have walked this path, and I want to share my story and show that becoming a mompreneur is a journey full of possibilities and learning experiences.

What Sparked My imagination to become a mompreneur

While my love of creating and all things crafty runs deep , when I was younger I never envisioned myself becoming a mompreneur. All that changed shortly after my first daughter was born and I stumbled upon an opportunity to teach Baby Sign language to my then 8 month old daughter.  When I found out the classes were not being offered in the town our family was moving to, I decided to embark on my mompreneur journey.  

I became a Baby Signs Instructor.  During the course of a couple years, I would offer 6 week Sign, Say and Play classes at our local recreation building as well as Parent Workshops at the hospital. It was awesome because it was so aligned to where I was in motherhood. Until it wasn’t. 

Difficult Decisions along my Mompreneur journey

As my daughters got older, they quickly aged out of baby sign language and teaching classes no longer made sense for me in more ways than one. So I moved onto my next adventure.

I’d like to say that the next few years were smooth sailing on my mompreneur journey.   But it wasn’t. Over the next few years I would find myself torn between my absolute love of crafting/sewing/selling my makes both on Etsy /in person and building a network marketing business focused on health/wellness.  

And while I ultimately decided to give my network marketing business more attention for reasons I’ll cover in another post, I always found ways to use my creativity in that business.  Creating graphics and presentations led me to discover Canva which has become my best friend as a mompreneur.

Of course, the journey wasn’t without its hurdles. Balancing the demands of motherhood and entrepreneurship is no easy task. I faced doubts and questions from myself (and others) about whether I could truly succeed in both roles. But these challenges only fueled my determination to prove that being a mompreneur is not just a dream but a reality. Because of the income I earned being a mompreneur, I was able to continue to be a stay at home mom and not go back to a corporate 9-5 job.

Through the ups and downs of my journey over the last 18 years, I’ve learned valuable lessons about time management, setting priorities, and building a brand. I’ve discovered the importance of networking with fellow Mompreneurs, seeking mentorship, and continuously expanding my knowledge through personal and professional growth. 

And while there is no playbook on any of this, I’m excited to share the lessons Ive learned along the way through this blog!

Coming Full Circle

As time went on things started shifting both personally and professionally. My daughters were growing up and needed me less.  Like most moms, we want to spend as much time as we can with our kids.  But if you’re a mom of teenagers, you know they don’t necessarily want to spend that much time with us. Being a crafty mompreneur, I found a way to spend quality time with my teens. 

Enter our  Scrunchie Sisters era! I’ll share the full story of how this started in another post, but in 2019 my daughters and I started making and selling hair scrunchies! It may not be a million dollar business, but the time I get to spend with them doing weekly markets is priceless!  

With one daughter already off to college and the other a junior in high school, an empty nest will be here before I know it. My focus is now back on crafting.  I’ve also recently taken up crocheting but I’ll save that story for another post. 

It definitely feels like things have come full circle from then and now.  In the picture below, THEN is when I was at a crossroads of deciding whether to craft or build a network marketing business, and NOW is one of our most recent family pictures where I’ve decided to turn my focus back to crafting.

But what has remained the same is I’m still a mompreneur and I love it!

The Mompreneur phenomenon is not based on heresay . It’s a growing reality.  I mean I don’t know about your newsfeed, but one quick scroll through Facebook, Tik Tok or Instagram and its very likely you’ll come across lots of moms who are sharing  their stories and crafty creations with the hopes of making some extra money! And I”m here for it!  I’m all about supporting other moms!

But don’t take my word for it. Women in business is on the rise! As of the most recent data available from the SBA and Census Bureau, women-owned businesses make up a significant and increasing share of the entrepreneurial landscape. An estimated 40% of all businesses in the U.S. are women-owned, marking a substantial increase over the past decade.

It’s a role that combines the nurturing spirit of a mother with the visionary spirit of an entrepreneur.
